Where Are the Main Expat Communities in Phuket?
Explore the vibrant expat communities of Phuket. Whether you're seeking work, retirement, or a diverse community, Phuket's got it all.

Phuket is among the most popular destinations in Thailand for expats looking to adopt a tropical lifestyle without sacrificing modern amenities. Whether you are looking for a job, a retirement haven, or an intriguing diverse community to settle with your family, Phuket has something to offer everyone. But Phuket is a big island so where are the best places to live? Here are some of the main expat communities where you can start your search.

Laguna

Laguna is an upmarket area located between Bang Tao Beach and Layan Beach. Laguna Phuket is a huge resort community that offers luxury villas, apartments, and several 5-star hotels, not to mention a huge range of facilities and services, such as spas, restaurants, shops, and an 18-hole golf course. Laguna is a great option for those who can afford it and value security, comfort, and convenience. It's also a very family-friendly area, with a kids club, a water park, and an international school nearby.

Cherng Talay

Cherng Talay, which is contiguous with Laguna, is another good centrally located option in a  lovely, more rural community located on the west coast of Phuket. It is surrounded by green hills, coconut plantations, and stunning beaches, such as Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach as well as up-and-coming neighborhoods such as Pasak, which is becoming well-known as a prime residential area. Cherng Talay is popular among expats who want to experience authentic Thai culture and lifestyle. You can find local markets, temples, and festivals here, as well as trendy cafes, bars, and restaurants. As well as upmarket villa developments, Cherng Talay also offers affordable housing options, from local houses to modern condos.

Kathu

Kathu is a great choice for expats looking for a mix of urban and beach living. It is centrally located on the island within a short drive to Phuket Town and close to the main shopping malls, international schools and hospitals, and golf courses. It is also the district that's home to the famous Patong Beach, which is known for its nightlife and entertainment. However, if you prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, you can also find some peaceful neighborhoods away from the beach such as around Loch Palm and Phuket Country Club golf courses.

Chalong

Chalong is a busier region located in the southeast of the island. It's the main hub for boating and diving activities, with its large pier and marina. It is also close to several attractions, such as the Big Buddha statue, Chalong Temple, and popular markets. Chalong is a favorite amongst those with active lifestyles and you can find many gyms, yoga studios, martial arts centers, and hiking trails here. Although Chalong has a variety of housing and accommodation options, from apartments to luxury villas.

Rawai

Rawai is a charming and laid-back area located on the south tip of Phuket. It is one of the original expat communities, with foreigners having begun settling here four decades ago. Rawai has a relaxed vibe and a friendly atmosphere with its smaller beaches and spectacular island views from the beachfront promenade. Rawai also has a diverse culinary scene, with seafood restaurants, international cuisines, and vegan cafes.

While this isn't an exhaustive list, these are a few of the main expat communities in Phuket to consider. The best way to find your ideal place is to explore yourself or join expat groups on Facebook where you can find advice and ask questions. You will soon meet new friends and find your home away from home in Phuket.
